SEAD

The Statue that Brings Life

Group project

SEP 2020 - NOV 2020

CONTEXT

Oil-based plastics have become more targeted and received criticism for their part in global pollution and environmental damage. However, the client aka Blue Blocks sees the potential of using biodegradable natural substitutes to create in-home decorations. The primary material they want to use is seaweed bioplastics, and they want to create a product that connects the product with the material.

CHALLENGE

The target group is unaware of the potential seaweed bio-plastics have on the future of home decor. There is not enough variety of these products for people to even consider them an alternative to traditional plastic and therefore are rarely found in people’s home environment.

Consumers want to decorate their houses with furniture that they know is fully sustainable

MY ROLE

I led the research phase, in particular the co-creation session and the experimentation respecting the covid regulations at that time.

I also led the ideation and sketching phase of the design, sharing the responsibility with another team member for the UI and UX.

I created the 3D models as well as the animation shown to the client.

The project was finalised on December 20th, 2020.

Inception of project

Understanding what the consumers want
To understand more about the needs of the consumers and focus on a target group, as a team we decided to conduct multiple co-creation sessions. With each session, we asked possible consumers around the ages of 18 - 50 about their opinion on the possible products that could be made and their interest in the subject.
The results led to the idea of creating a small figure made out of seaweed that could be sold seasonally, and that could teach consumers about the marine environment and the marine impact they might have on it.

Inception of project

Experimenting with the material
Simultaneously we decided to conduct experiments to create seaweed bioplastic.
For that, we used a simple chemical mixture of agar, glycerin and different volumes of water.
We adapted and further developed and evolved the concept into a feasible idea with each test.

Moodboard inspiration

Focusing on the sea

We decided to go with a concept fully inspired by the sea. As the ideation evolved, the concept started to take shape
